Interior Stylist, Creative Consultant and Designer, Kirsten Bookallil shows us how to style one of the key colours of the season – olive.

Do you see olive as a key colour coming through for the season ahead?

Olive has a timeless, eternal quality to it. It is less formal than a navy and less serious than a grey. Pantone predicted it as one of the colours of Autumn 2018 and it has come through strongly in fashion and homewares since.

It is a colour that confidently grounds the lighter pinks and nudes of last season. Feeling confidently like a neutral as it works back well with many colours and doesn’t contrast in an unpleasant way with the eye, instead it seems to ground other tones like mustardlinen sheets, copper and lilac which are colours hard to find complementary hues within living areas.

What advice would you give someone who is new to introducing colour into their home, in particular olive?

Many colours work back with olive and therefore last season’s colours suddenly feel fresh when put beside olive. This means you don’t necessarily have to buy all new items but can work olive back with existing pieces and it suddenly updates what you already have. Olive isn’t a huge shock as it works so well as a neutral hue in a home.

What was the vision behind styling olive for our Spring/Summer ’18 collection?

Olive evokes nature without feeling tropical. It sits in a more serious place and tone and therefore can be mixed and matched in tone and texture, bringing a sophisticated level to homewares and living spaces. Olive works well in sheeting, with fresh whites without looking garish and then pairs back beautifully with light greys and textured raffia pieces. It tones down other greens that have too much yellow and its overall affect is calming and sophisticated. It’s my definite colour of this season but harks to military uniforms and history that makes it feel timeless in its nature.

While not necessarily talked about as much as soccer or Pokémon Go, kite-flying is a fun and inexpensive way for kids to get some outdoor activity. What’s more, kite-flying provides parents a peaceful way to spend time with their children.
